After some fun exploring Melaka (a new city for me) to start May I spent the rest of the month volunteering at hostels in Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. Wholly shit the time flew by. There wasn’t too much in the way of highlights or lowlight…perhaps that’s from getting into a routine with the volunteering (in KL especially).

Cities Visited

Flexing with Mr Melaka in, you guessed it, Melaka

  • Melaka, Malaysia
  • Ipoh, Malaysia
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Stadiums & Arenas Visited

Look at all the photographers…they’ll be getting all of the exact same photos.

I visited two different stadiums to watch football this month. The KLFA Stadium which I visited last month. This time I was there watching Kuala Lumpur vs. Kelantan. Kuala Lumpur destroyed them 5-1 having lost the same fixture 2-4 a couple weeks earlier.

The second was Perak Stadium in Ipoh, which has just gone through renovations. Honestly, it didn’t have any standout features. It was just another multipurpose stadium providing a mediocre football viewing experience. Perak defeated Terrenganu 3-2.

Exploring Melaka

“The architecture in Melaka is gorgeous.” – Everyone

People always mention the architecture of the buildings in Melaka. Honestly, that had put me off visiting as architecture isn’t my cuppa tea. But I’m glad I visited, it was a cool city.
What I liked about Ipoh:

  • lots of vegetarian restaurants
  • the bars, cafes, and sights along the river
  • the walkability of the city

Volunteering At A Hostel

Reception at Nowhere Hostel in Kuala Lumpur…the photo colours are funky because of the tinted windows.

After the meditation retreat in May I decided I wanted to do volunteering again. That happened in May. Granted, there are probably more worthy causing than volunteering at a hostel I am helping out those who run hostels and make their life a little bit easier. Justified.

I was volunteering at Nowhere Hostel which isn’t the best location in KL for most backpackers, but with the public transport isn’t a nightmare. The hostel itself is awesome with lots of open space and a chilled environment. If you’re staying in KL for more than two nights, definitely stay here.

Spending time in Kuala Lumpur

This lady wasn’t going to let the surface flooding prevent her from reaching her spot. Boss.

This city is growing on me, there’s lots to do. Maybe I could live in here in the future? Maybe that’s a bit of a farfetched idea but if all the stars aligned and I made an effort to socialize (see below) it could be great.

Not Enjoying Ipoh

Some cool street art featuring Bruce Lee in Ipoh

I’m not sure why I didn’t embrace Ipoh this time (my fourth visit). I was only there for a few days, but I think the heat and rain were big factors. I still think it’s an awesome place to visit, but honestly, I was glad to get out of there after initialing planning to be there for a few weeks.

Not Socializing In KL

running in the botanical gardens

Maybe I should make some running friends in different cities

This was my fault. I socialized a bunch with the guests at the hostel but they’re almost always just there for a few nights maximum. Given I was in KL for three weeks it was the perfect time to make friends with people living there at CouchSurfing meetups etc. Buuuut I got comfortable staying at the hostel in the evenings. No real regrets…

Not Making It To Sepang International Circuit

Again, my fault. I really wanted to take the tour of the circuit which is near KLIA airport but was always too lazy. It’s a mission to get too so I always told myself I’d go the next day. Before I knew it, time to leave KL. Doh! I’ll be looking to visit when I pass through Kuala Lumpur again.

What I Read In April

I’m getting through the books consistently now (and getting the notes up here (I’m behind on that)

. Loving it!

Anyway, in May I read:

  • Blood, Sweat and Treason by Henry Olonga
  • This Road I Ride by Juliana Buhring
  • Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable by Tim S. Grover
  • Jonah Lomu: The Autobiography by Jonah Lomu
  • I Am Duran: The Autobiography by Roberto Duran
  • Strongman: My Story by Eddie Hall
